Humana has assisted a growing project by donating money to build a pavilion at the organic garden located behind Walmart. Several gathered in the cold on Friday morning to see the pavilion.
At the gathering, Pat Biggerstaff recognized several individuals who had a hand in the project including mayor Bill Kelley, state Rep. Rick Nelson and magistrates Coy Silcox and Junior Maiden.
“It has been a community and village effort,” said Kelley in reference to getting the project completed.
Biggerstaff also announced she had been talking to the Grow Appalachia Fund and it is believed they will help install a high tunnel near the pavilion. A high tunnel is a unheated greenhouse that can help market gardeners extend their growing season.
Biggerstaff also stated there are plans to expand all of the organic beds and place a couple of greenhouses in the area.
Approximately six months ago, Bell County became one of the first communities in the area to have a community organic garden. The project was started by Humana, in conjunction with Mircoclinic International (MCI).
This project was inspired by the thought of people being able to grow their own food so they could spend less money in the store and eat healthier.
Leigh Ann Baker, a member of the Team Up for Health Program, explained that the whole idea for this garden grew from teaching people classes about how to eat healthy.
