The Middlesboro High School boy’s golf team traveled to London on Tuesday afternoon to participate in a tri-match hosted by South Laurel.

The Jackets shot a team total of 167, to finish in second place. Barbourville won the match with a team total of 165, beating the Jackets by two strokes. South Laurel finished with a 176 to finish third.

After going 1-1 on Tuesday, MHS now stands at 31 wins with only 8 losses on the season.

Middlesboro was led once again by senior co-captain Michael Wilson with a 3-over 38. J.P. Maiden made his return from a knee injury to fire a solid 41. Other scores for the Jackets were Micah Robbins with a 43, Eric Francis fired a 45; and Luke Boyd posted a 50.

“We just played okay (Tuesday), nothing spectacular. We have got to get 4 guys shooting a decent score to really be contenders for the region,” Jacket coach Greg Lasley said. “It seems like lately half the team will play well and the other half not so well. It makes it a hard team sport to post 4 really good scores. We have to get our focus back; I think some of the guys are going through the motions right now, and you cannot do that in golf.”

The Jackets will return to action today at the Country Club. This will be the last conference match and the last home match of the season. Today is also the final home appearance for seniors Wilson, Boyd, Francis and Maiden.

“I have only coached these guys for two years, but they have made my job very enjoyable. They are some great guys, and they have represented their school, community, and families very well,” Lasley added.
