Jackets pull away from Bath County

The Middlesboro Yellow Jackets took out some frustrations Friday night as they rolled to 49-14 win over Bath County in the first round of th e Class 2A playoffs.

Sophomore quarterback Chase Roark had a prolific night as he completed 25 of 41 passes for 340 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Jacket offense.

Middlesboro mixed the run and the pass effectively in the early going to keep the Wildcats off balance and it opened up opportunities all over the field.

Roark hit Josh Delauer for a 19-yard gain to convert a 3rd and 9 on the the opening drive of the game. Three runs and three passes later senior receiver Matt Powers scored on a 13-yard pass from Roark and Patrick Knuckles added the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 6:41remaining in the first quarter.

Bath County answered with a couple of big plays as Josh Terry returned the kickoff 40 yards and Hayden Swartz found a seam for a 36-yard run down to the Jacket 11. One play later Caleb Kilburn punched into the end zone from two yards out and Taylor Staton’s kick tied the game at 7.

Powers returned the ensuing kickoff 62 yards to the Wildcat 28 and one play later Roark hooked up with sophomore Thomas Epperson for a 23-yard TD strike.

The fireworks continued as Terry returned the kickoff 90 yards for a TD and the score was 14-14 with 2:41 remaining in the first quarter.

Delauer’s 42-yard run set up a 9-yard touchdown run for senior Cody Smith as Middlesboro went back on top 21-14.

It was all Middlesboro from there. Powers intercepted Terry on the next Bath drive to give the Jackets good field position. Roark threw to Smith for 28 yards and later hooked up with Epperson again for a 14-yard touchdown and a 28-14 lead less than two minutes into the second quarter.

Middlesboro forced a three and out and went to work on the ground on their next drive. Smith, Delauer and Roark combined for 43 yards on seven carries during a 13-play, 62-yard drive. Smith capped it with a 15-yard touchdown run and the score was 35-14 at the half after the teams traded late interceptions.

Epperson intercepted Terry on the first drive of the third quarter and Smith took a Roark pass 39 yards to the end zone on the very next play to put the game away.

Powers caught a 5-yard TD pass from Roark early in the fourth quarter to set the final score at 49-14. Knuckles was 7-for-7 on extra points.

Powers was the leading Middlesboro receiver with seven catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Epperson also scored twice and gained 57 yards on five catches.

Smith caught six passes for 112 yards and one score and added 68 rushing yards and two TDs on the ground while Delauer ran seven times for 43 yards and caught three passes for 22 yards.

Senior receiver Barton Poore hauled in four passes for 43 yards.

Bath County was led by Kilburn’s 69 rushing yards while Terry ran for 56, threw for 29 and had the big kick return for a touchdown.

On defense the Jackets were led by Zack Riddle and Dalton Hughett with seven tackles each. Shay Patterson added five, while Jon Mikel Evans and Delauer had four each. Powers came away with two interceptions and Epperson one.

Middlesboro (4-7) faces a tough trip to Prestonsburg (11-0) for their second round game. The Blackcats defeated Knott Central 56-8 Friday.

Bath County end the season with a record of 2-9.
