Troopers from Kentucky State Police Post 10- Harlan responded to a two-vehicle collision on U.S. 25E in the Flatlick community of Knox County on Christmas Eve.
One person killed in the crash was an assistant principal at James A. Cawood Elementary School in Harlan County, her husband who was director of finance for Letcher County Schools and their daughter, who was a speech therapist at a Florida school.
KSP Post 10 received the call at 5:20 p.m. When troopers arrived to the scene, preliminary investigations revealed that a 2004 Ford Taurus operated by David Vanderpool, 31, of Williamsburg, was traveling northbound on U.S. 25E. A 2010 Toyota Camry operated by Gary Caldwell, 61, of Putney, was traveling southbound on U.S. 25E. The vehicle operated by Vanderpool crossed the median and struck the Caldwell vehicle head-on.
Due to the severity of this collision and the injuries sustained, none of the five individuals survived.
Those killed in this collision were Vanderpool, Gary Caldwell, Patricia Caldwell, 58, Putney, Julia Robinson, 29, and Brent Robinson, 30, both of Bradenton, Fla. Vanderpool and both Robinson subjects were not wearing their seat belts.
The Robinsons were passengers in the Caldwell vehicle.
U.S. 25E was closed for nearly five hours while the crash was investigated and reconstructed.
Kentucky State Police Accident Reconstructionist, Det. Michael H. Cornett is in charge of the investigation. He was assisted on scene by KSP Sgt. Jeremy Lee, troopers Joey Brigmon, Chad Gregory, Jason Partin and Marcus Williams.
Also assisting was the Knox County Sheriff’s Department, Knox County Coroner’s Office, Knox County EMS and troopers from KSP Post 11 in London.
