LOG MOUNTAIN —Cumberland Gap’s girls never really had a chance.
Bell County senior forward Paige Robbins scored 12 of her game-high 14 points in the first quarter as the Lady Cats built a 19-8 lead and never look back.
The lead grew to 33-8 midway through the second quarter and all 13 Lady Cats that dressed scored at least one point as Bell County cruised to a 76-36 win on homecoming Thursday night.
Jess Sanders added 13 points while Kelli Smith, Katrina Johnson, Jamie Boatright and Kaitlyn Taylor each scored eight for the Lady Cats.
Cumberland Gap was led by senior forward Whitney Elliott’s 11 points and junior guard Chelsea Bingham added 10.
Bingham hit a pair of 3-pointers for the Lady Panthers to end Bell’s run in the second period, but Smith scored all eight of her points in the period (also hitting two 3s). Morgan Garnett went four for four from the free throw line and Sanders converted a three-point play. Genna Lake and Elliott had baskets for Cumberland Gap as the halftime score was 40-18.
Sanders knocked down two 3-pointers in the third quarter and Johnson also connected from downtown on her way to five points as the Lady Cats continued to pull away. Cumberland Gap got five points from Elliott and a basket from Bingham as Bell’s lead was 56-25 after three.
Rachel Kimbrough and Morgan Beeler scored four points each for CG in the fourth quarter and Amber Craig hit a 3, but the Bell County bench was also very effective. Taylor hit two 3s from the corner, Alex Brock also connected from long range and Boatright scored four points. A late basket from Allison Howard set the final score at 76-36.
Bell sophomore guard Maci Morris sat out with her knee injury as a precaution. She received good news from the doctor on Wednesday and while she’s questionable for Friday’s game she should be able to return to the court in the near future.
The Lady Cats (21-4) play host to Knox Central this evening in the first game of a double-header starting at 6 p.m.
The Lady Panthers (4-20) wrap up their regular season on Saturday at Chuckey-Doak and will start play in the District 2-AA Tournament on Thursday at Claiborne.
