WILMORE — The Lady Railsplitters scored three unanswered goals to open the contest and held on for a 3-2 victory over nonconference opponent Asbury University on Tuesday in Wilmore, Ky.

The victory takes the Lincoln Memorial University women’s soccer team to 5-2 on the season, while Asbury falls to 1-5 overall in the 2012 campaign.

The Lady Railsplitters struck early and often in the contest, notching their first goal at the 9:21 mark with a score from Maddy Nagy. Nagy picked up the first goal of her collegiate career off of a pass from Brittany Jenkins to put LMU out to a 1-0 advantage.

That score stood until the 33rd minute, when Samantha Hilliard netted her first goal of the 2012 season. She was unassisted on the goal as that took the Lady Railsplitters to a 2-0 lead, which held until the first half of play came to a close.

At the 66:36 mark, LMU found the net for the third time, as Josefin Hedstrom used a dish from Nicole McKinney to find the back of the net for her third score of the season.

With the Lady Railsplitters holding a 3-0 lead, Asbury rallied in the closing minutes, notching a goal from Casey Greer in the 73rd minute. Asbury moved to within one in the 85th minute, as Meredith Ury scored her first goal of the season. However, that goal would fall as the final shot in the game for Asbury, as Lincoln Memorial University held on for a 3-2 victory on the road.

LMU won nearly every category as they dominated the shot battle, firing 20 in the contest to only 14 for Asbury. Ten of Asbury’s shots came in the second half of play. Of those 20 shots for LMU, 14 came on goal with Maddy Nagy leading the way with seven. Josefin Hedstrom compiled three shots on goal in the contest. LMU recorded three corner kicks while Asbury only attempted one.

Kayla Hanson played a perfect 48 minutes in goal for the Lady Railsplitters before giving way to Emma Miller and Kayla Stephens down the stretch. The trio totaled six saves on the evening. Lizzie Hoffa and Jessica Batey combined to make 11 saves in 90 minutes in goal for Asbury.

The Lady Railsplitters return to the LMU Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon for a South Atlantic Conference battle against Anderson University. That match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
