LOG MOUNTAIN — Bell County hosted an SEKC Panorama Monday evening with the Lady Cats and Bobcats taking Pineville’s boys and girls in officiated scrimmages.

In the boys’ scrimmage it was the Mountain Lions outscoring Bell 45-34. Cody Hendrickson and Brandon Hollingsworth led Pineville with 10 points each while Shawn Madon added eight.

Bell County was led by Bryan Robbins and Kyle Lee with 10 points each.

Both teams are looking to fill holes early in the season. Pineville lost five seniors from last year’s team and three starters from last year’s. Of course they’ll miss James David Strange and his 24 points per game and will also have to replace two of their next top scorers in Jesse Fuson and Michael Cunningham.

Hendrickson and Hollingsworth stepped up in the scrimmage and combined with senior Mark Combs to hit six 3-pointers.

Madon is a returning starter along with Tyler Tuttle, who scored two points Monday.

Coach J.D. Strange said a lot remains up in the air and he’ll work with multiple lineups early in the season until he finds the right combination.

“We feel like this group coming back has been exposed to some very positive things over the past four or five years and hopefully some of that will carry over,” he said. “The big key will be trying to develop that chemistry and playing together, and we’ve got to continue to work on fundmental skills.”

Freshman forward John Smipson came off the bench to score all five of his points in the second half.

Bell coach Lewis Morris said his Bobcats have had trouble fielding enough players to practice with seven or so players still involved in football and Robbins, a senior forward just getting back after dealing with an injury.

“We’re just trying to survive right now,” he said. “I’ve got a bunch that haven’t really played before and it’s hard to get things in. We’re just biding our time and working on fundamentals.”

Robbins and senior guard Mitchell Mayes return as starters and Lee, a sophomore is also pushing for playing time. Bell will have to replace two backcourt standouts in Shawnta Zachery and George Wilson.

Among those who played last year that are still working on winning another state football championship are guards Ben Madon and Brian Thacker and forwards Justin Patterson, Keith Lowe and John Dudley Hilton.

“I have no clue right now who’s going to be starting for us,” Morris said. “It just depends on how the kid come out and work and how the younger kids challenge them.”

Pineville opens the regular season next Tuesday at Harlan County while Bell will play at Corbin on Thursday, Dec. 4.
