The Middlesboro 11-year-old All-Stars saw their tournament run come to an end Monday with a 9-3 loss to Crobin in the District 4 Tournament.
Middlesboro jumped out to an early lead as Jeremiah Wilder reached on an error to start the game and then scored from second on a base hit by Hagen Owens.
Corbin answered in the bottom of the first and took the lead for good with four runs. Colin Kidd and Christian Gosselin opened the frame with singles and they would both later come around to score. Peyton Tirey reached on an error and Austin Reynolds drew a walk and they would also score in the inning to make it 4-1.
Middlesboro nearly got a run back in the third as Owens singled and Chris Callihan doubled, but Owens was thrown out trying to score on Callihan’s hit.
An RBI singled by Jayson Stancil scored Reynolds in the second inning to stretch the Corbin lead to 5-1.
The ‘Boro did get on the board again in the fourth as Eli Welch singled and courtesy runner Dillon Lamb later scored on a ground ball by Tipton Hembree.
Corbin nearly broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth as Matthew Creekmore reached on an error, Kidd walked and Gosselin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brody Barton hit a little nubber between home and the pitcher’s mound and Middlesboro catcher Eli Welch was able to tag Creekmore out at home. Kidd tried to score from third as Welch threw the ball to Callihan, who was pitching. This time Callihan got the ball to Welch for the second out of the inning.
Corbing did get one run as Peyton Tirey reached on a fielder’s choice and Reynolds added a two-run single to make the score 8-2.
It was 9-2 going into the sixth when Josh Gullett drew a lead-off walk and then scored on Sarah Brooks’ RBI double, but 9-3 would prove to be the final score.
Though Middlesboro is eliminated, the tournament continues today with Hazard and Knox County meeting in the winners’ bracket final at 7 p.m. and Corbin taking on North Laurel in the losers’ bracket at 9 p.m.
The Hazard-Knox loser will play the Corbin-North winner Wednesday at 8 p.m. with the championship game now set for Thursday at 8 p.m.
