Staff Report
At approximately 8 p.m. on Saturday, officers of the Middlesboro Police Department (MPD) apprehended George Wesley Upton. Upton escaped from the Marion Adjustment Center Minimum Security Prison near Lebanon on May 29and has been at large since then. Upton was imprisoned on wanton endangerment convictions stemming from charges placed by both the Kentucky State Police and MPD.
Since he is from Bell County, it was suspected that he would eventually return to this area and KSP, MPD and the Bell County Sheriff’s Office have pursued numerous leads as to his whereabouts over the last two weeks. MPD officer Charles Bruce developed a lead on Upton’s location.
Bruce, along with officers Josh Burchett and Barry Cowan staked out the location and captured Upton without incident as he returned to the area. He was a passenger in a vehicle. No charges were filed against any other occupants of the vehicle.
Upton was taken to the Bell County Detention Center on a charge of second-degree escape. He will appear before Judge Robert Yoakum in Bell District Court. Arrangements will be made sometime next week for the Kentucky Department of Corrections to take custody of Upton.
