HARROGATE, Tenn. — In a physical contest highlighted by the defensive effort on both sides, the Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer team played the Union University Bulldogs to a 0-0 tie on Tuesday afternoon at the LMU Soccer Complex. With the scoreless tie, the Railsplitters move to 1-0-1 on the season, while Union University matches that mark at 1-0-1.
Throughout the contest, the two teams jousted back and forth on the offensive and defensive side of the ball, with neither team willing to let up on the effort. The Railsplitters bested the Bulldogs in the shot category with 17 in the match, 11 of those coming in the second half of play. The Bulldogs notched an even spread of shots with seven coming in the first stanza and six falling in the second.
The Railsplitters’ best scoring chance came in the middle portion of the first half, as LMU fired three shots in a nine-minute span. All three efforts narrowly missed as LMU and Union remained tied at 0-0.
Lincoln Memorial University saw another streak of scoring opportunities fall short in the second half, as the Railsplitters pounded three shots in a six-minute span. Bulldog keeper Matt Kesler sucked in one of those shots to keep the score knotted at 0-0.
Union University’s best chance came in the 81st minute, as Brian Castro’s header skirted just outside of the right post. The score would remain tied throughout regulation as the game came to a close at 0-0.
Marcel Barwanietz played the entire game in goal for the Railsplitters, compiling four saves in the strong defensive effort. Not to be outdone, Union’s Matt Kesler played the whole contest, recording five saves on the day.
The Railsplitters will be back in action on Saturday, as they head to the University of Montevallo for a regional road test. That game is slated for a 7 p.m. start in Montevallo, Ala.
