If you could talk with an astronaut aboard the International Space Station, what questions would you ask?

That is the very question Shawn Fultz asked his science students as they learned about an in-flight education downlink with space station crew members.

Recently, a NASA educational office decided to host an event called “Teaching from Space” in conjunction with educational organizations across the United States. The purpose was to allow students to pose questions to astronauts live and watch as the astronauts demonstrate science and technology concepts that are impossible on earth. In addition, students have been exploring science and technology firsthand by designing a project to present on the day of the Downlink.

As a participating school, students at Yellow Creek were invited to submit questions, along with a 200 to 300 word essay, to the space explorers to find out what it is like to live and work in space. Upon approval from a NASA review team, 20 questions were selected nationwide to be asked by students.

Yellow Creek is proud to announce that out of hundreds of submissions to NASA, the question written by eighth grade student Tyler Reese and seventh grade student Ethan Warren, was selected by the review committee to be the 19th question asked to the astronauts during a live KET broadcast on Jan. 11.

The students will be prepping themselves in front of the camera in anticipation of the big moment when they get to ask the astronauts, “What has been your greatest accomplishment while on the ISS?”
