Three Bell County Lady Cat softball players represented eastern Kentucky this past weekend in a series of All-Star games at the University of Louisville.
Seniors Kristen Slusher and Rachel Yeary along with junior Haley Goodman were chosen to play for the East teams in the Kentucky Softball Coaches Association’s annual East-West All-Star weekend.
Yeary and Slusher played on the East Senior team and they were joined by a few other players from the 13th Region in Corbin’s Bethany Hensley, Whitley County’s Ashley Lindsay and North Laurel’s Kristin Fields.
Goodman played for the East Junior team. Other 13th Region players on that squad included Megam Baldwin and Sidney Harrell of North Laurel, and Jadon Dople of Whitley County.
After practice sessions on Friday afternoon and a pizza party Friday night, the games started Saturday at 9 a.m. The East Seniors beat the East Juniors 4-2 and the West Seniors beat the West Juniors 6-4.
Following that game awards were presented, including the KSCA Miss Softball to Kelsi Pardue of Allen County-Scottsville. Bell’s Slusher was named to the coaches Class 2A All-State first team. Corbin’s Hannah Hart was named the Class 2A Player of the Year. Also from the 13th Region, North Laurel’s Fields and South Laurel’s Amber Hyde and Hagan Burns all received an honorable mention in the Class 3A All-State team.
Bell County coach J.W. Campbell was co-coach of the year in the region along with Corbin’s Chris Hart while Slusher shared the 13th Region Player of the Year with North Laurel’s Fields.
The afternoon slate of games saw the West Seniors beat the East Juniors 2-0 and the West Juniors beat the East Seniors 9-0.
The KSCA held their annual Hall of Fame banquet Saturday evening. This years inductees included 1996 Miss Softball Brittany Collini Hoyer, coach Ted Marlette, honoree Butch Dotson, umpire Kenn Clark, Amy Eichhorn of Franklin County, Sarah Driver of Christian County, Leigh Ann Moore of Hopkins Central and Tabitha Embry of Daviess County.
Sunday morning saw the games resume with the West Juniors outslugging the East Juniors 15-8 and the West Seniors beating the East Seniors 20-0.
After the games, the coaches selected a team of seniors to represent Kentucky on June 28 when they’ll play a three game series against a team of Tennessee All-Stars at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green.
Bell’s Yeary was selected for the Kentucky All-Star team along with North Laurel’s Fields, Corbin’s Hensley and Whitley County’s Lindsay.
Campbell will be helping to coach the Kentucky team along with Tony Hayden of Reidland, Kelly Cable of Shelby County and Tracy Spickard of Franklin County.
