Staff Report

A strong thunderstorm came rolling into town Thursday evening. The straight-line winds caused damage in several areas.

The storm caused several trees to fall and assisted in a transformer malfunction behind Mountain Tarp. An electrical line did fall on the top of a flat-bed truck, which caught the truck on fire, according to Middlesboro Police Chief Jeff Sharpe. No one was injured in the fire.

The winds were also the blame for some damage that was done at a couple of businesses around town. Parts of the Food City sign was blown away by the winds. Parts of the Big Lots roof were also blown from the roof during the storm.

The fireworks stand in front of Goody’s toppled over. Witnesses claim that people were inside when the wind blew it over but no confirmation was made. No injuries were reported.

A tent outside of Layman’s produce was also victim to the winds. The wind picked the table up and thrust it up against a electrical pole.
