LOG MOUNTAIN —The Bell County Lady Cat continued their impressive run on Friday, downing Knox Central 63-46 for their twelfth win in their last 13 games.
Coach David Teague acknowledged after the game that his team has a great chance to contend in both the 52nd District and the 13th Region this season as long as they stay focused on those goals.
“We’ve just got to continue to work and be focused. This time of year you have to be more focused than ever because it’s getting to be crunch time and the district is right around the corner,” he said. “I think they will. This team had got a lot of drive about them and they play with a lot of heart and a lot of energy. If we continue to focus in practice, stay focused for four quarters, continue to play on the defensive side of the floor and take care of the basketball good things can continue to happen for this group of girls.”
Sophomore guard Jess Sanders led the way on Friday with 23 points while junior guard Morgan Garnett added 16 and senior forward Paige Robbins chipped in with nine.
Knox Central was led by Jenna Mills with 12 points and Cassi Shippy with 11. The Lady Panthers also got seven points each from Megan Carnes and Kendra Hubbard.
Sandeers scored ten of her points in the first quarter, including two 3s, and Garnett also hit two from long range as the Lady Cats built an 18-8 lead.
“Jess is a big contributor to our basketball team. She’s got all the ability in the world when she plays. The last few games with Maci out Jess and our other guards, Morgan and Katrina (Johnson), have done a good job stepping up and getting us in our offense and making shots,” Teague said. “Jess has been a good leader for us and she’s kind of taken that role on the court for us.”
Knox held firm in the second period as Mills scored six points and Shippy, Carnes and Hubbard added baskets as the score was 29-21 by halftime.
As they have many time during their recent hot stretch, the Lady Cats took control of things with a dominant third quarter. Garnett scored ten of her points in the period and Knox was held to just three made field goals as the lead grew to 45-26.
“I don’t know if at halftime we make adjustments or if they just get refocused, but we seem to play well throughout the third quarter and hopefully that’s something that will continue,” Teague added.
Both teams subbed heavily in the fourth quarter as the Lady Cats went on to the 17-point win.
Bell County (22-4) plays at Barbourville on Monday while Knox Central (13-14) visits Hazard on Tuesday.
