The Superintendent Screening Committee for the Middlesboro Independent Schools met Thursday night at the Middlesboro Board of Education Central Office, continuing the process of selecting a new superintendent.
Kentucky School Boards Association Superintendent Search Consultant Mike Oder addressed the group to make sure they understood their roles and responsibilities of the screening committee, as well as the roles and responsibilities of the members of the board.
Concerning the board’s responsibilities, the consultant made it clear the board had the final say regardless of the screening committee’s recommendations.
“They are not bound by anything you give them. They may interview anyone they want out of all of the applications,” explained Oder. “And, they can hire anyone they want from the applications.”
He went on to say that due to the board having the final say, they alone would be held responsible if the search goes poorly and a poor superintendent is hired.
“The board is responsible for hiring the superintendent and it is the board that the community should hold accountable,” continued Oder.
However, Oder pointed out that while the board is not bound by the recommendations of the screening committee, their recommendations will receive serious consideration.
“Your job is to screen and their’s is to figure out who to hire,” concluded Oder.
