Late runs lift Harlan past Lady Cats

Harlan scored one run in the sixth inning and two in the seventh to pull out a 5-2 win over the Bell County Lady Cats on Tuesday.

The Lady Dragons opened the scoring with a run in the first inning.

Anna Karst reached base on a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. She scored on a triple from Torri Mitchell.

Bell County jumped into the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.

Morgan Garnett doubled to reach base and Jess Sanders followed with an RBI triple. Sanders later scored on a wild pitch for a 2-1 Lady Cat lead.

Harlan pulled even at two with a run in the fourth inning.

Mitchell singled to start the offense. She advanced when Madison Brewer hit into a fielder’s choice. Jourdan Ledford then drove in the runner with a single.

The score remained 2-2 until the top of the sixth inning when Kaylee McNiel singled to reach base for Harlan. McNiel advanced on a fielding error at short and scored on a throwing error to first.

The Lady Dragons closed the scoring with a pair of runs in the seventh inning.

Noe double to lead off the inning. She advanced to third on a passed ball. Karst drove in the run with a single to right field. Mitchell followed with a double to bring home Karst.

Mitchell led the Harlan offense with a triple, a double and a single. Ledford contributed two singles. Noe and Kaitlyn Jenkins each delivered a double. Karst, McNiel and Heather Holland all singled.

Sanders tripled to pace Bell at the plate. Garnett added a double, while Shasta Centers and Courtney Baker added a single.

Madison Brewer recorded seven strikeouts, while allowing four hits in the complete-game victory on the mound.

Garnett struck out two batters in a complete-game effort in the loss.

Harlan (10-10 overall, 1-3 district) returns to action Friday at home against Pineville. Bell County (2-9 overall, 2-2 district) will host Barbourville on Monday.
