About 100 students from the University of Tennessee CROSS Organization spent their fall break in Bell County. The Bell-Whitley Community Action Agency coordinated the efforts to improve homes in need of repairs.
Among those benefiting from the students’ work was Elizabeth Denny of Hutch. Students constructed a new ramp to her home.
In addition, she received a heating unit to replace her coal stove. The heating unit was paid for by a grant through a Federal Home Loan Bank program. Commercial Bank served as the member bank which assisted in getting the grant.
Brock said the repairs to the home were made possible with the help of all the agencies working together. She said others in need of assistance should contact Bell-Whitley CAA to be added to the list.
Pineville Branch Manager Kelly Chumley presented a check to the Bell-Whitley Community Action Agency for accessibility rehabilitation and emergency repairs. These home repairs will benefit low-moderate income, special needs and elderly families in Bell County.
The grant funding is through the Accessibility Rehabilitation Program through the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati. Bell-Whitley is the sponsor organization. Again, Commercial Bank is the member bank.
Funds totaling $75,000 from the grant program are reserved for Bell-Whitley. More than $17,000 has recently been disbursed to families identified by Bell-Whitley for emergency home repairs.
