Relay for Life of Bell County kicked off their 2013 campaign Thursday night at the Middlesboro Mall.
Relay for Life members not only raise money for cancer research but use the opportunity to honor and remember those they have lost to cancer while continuing to support those who have survived the disease.
Despite the threat of winter weather, there was a large turnout for the kickoff.
Returning Bell County Relay for Life Chairman, Brian O’Brien, hosted Thursday night’s event and started off with recognizing last year’s fundraising efforts.
Value Rx was recognized for reaching the Rising Star fundraising level for raising over $1,000; Walgreens, Food-City, Walmart and Community Trust Bank received recognition for having reached the Bronze fundraising level by raising over $2,500; First State Financial and Smithfield were recognized for reaching the silver fundraising level by raising over $3,500; Middlesboro ARH Hospital was recognized by reaching the gold level by raising over $5,000 and Home Federal Bank reached the sapphire level by raising over $15,000.
A moment of silence was observed while relay members held the traditional Relay for Life luminaria ceremony.
Next, O’Brien quizzed the crowd with Relay for Life trivia, with winners receiving Relay for Life umbrellas. All of the trivia quiz winners were from Home Federal Bank.
This years’ team captain meetings will be held at 5:30 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of the month at Shades of Brown Cafe.
The 2013 Relay for Life Event will be held on June 7, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
