Staff Report

Jason Griffey appeared in Bell Circuit Court on Friday for a competency hearing and was found competent to stand trial on numerous sexual offenses involving boys under the age of 12.

After about a 15-minute hearing, Griffey, 29 of Middlesboro, was found competent. He will appear in court for a pre-trial conference at 9 a.m. on Feb. 15.

This was the second competency hearing for Griffey. He was a no show at the first hearing held about four months ago.

Court records show, at that time, officer Leon Wilson of the Bell County Sheriff’s Office attempted to pick Griffey up when he was advised Griffey “didn’t feel like coming over.”

Griffey was indicted on 11 counts of first-degree sodomy, seven counts of first-degree sexual abuse and nine counts of first-degree criminal attempt to commit sexual abuse.

All of the alleged victims in the case are boys under the age of 12.

Griffey was originally arrested on Oct. 14, 2011, for just the 11 counts of sodomy. He was charged with sexual abuse and criminal attempt to commit sexual abuse following investigation.

Officer Josh Pratt of the Middlesboro Police Department was the arresting officer.
