Staff report

The Cumberland Gap Lady Panthers split a pair of five-inning games against the Scott Highlanders on Thursday, dropping the opener 5-4 then pounding out 14 hits on the way to a 13-4 win in game two.

Game one saw Scott put up three runs in the bottom of the first before the Lady Panthers chipped away. Olivia Price doubled home Chelsey Williams in the second inning. Then Cumberland Gap got singles from Lindsey Elliott and Gena Lake in the third before McKayla Hamilton moved them up with a grounder and Elliott scored on a passed ball.

The Lady Panthers tied the game in the fourth with a two-out rally. Price singled, Kaitlyn McCarty reached on an error and Elliott belted a two-run doubled that made it 4-4.

Cumberland Gap put two runners on in the top of the fifth, but left them stranded and the Highlanders pushed one across in the bottom of the inning to take the 5-4 win in walk-off fashion.

The Lady Panthers took charge early in the second game. McKenzie Miracle led off by reaching on an error, Price and Elliott both singled to load the bases with one out. With two down, Lake lofted a two-run double to left-center then Hamilton and Jordan Thacker followed with RBI singles. Hamilton later stole second and then scored on a wild pitch for a 5-0 lead.

Scott took advantage of an outfield error and a passed ball to score twice in the bottom of the inning and managed to close within 5-4 after three.

Cumberland Gap got those two runs back in the fourth as Thacker led off with a single, stole second and scored on a pair of wild pitches. Julia Satterfield walked, stole second and then scored on Miracle’s single to push the lead back to 7-4.

The Lady Panthers put the game away with six runs in the top of the fifth. Danielle Caldwell and Hamilton both singled and one run scored as Thacker reached on an error. Satterfield followed with a two-run triple and then scored on a base hit by Miracle that made it 11-4. Singles by Price and McCarty brought in another run and an RBI ground out Elliott set the final at 13-4.

Caldwell earned the win after pitching all five innings. She gave up four runs, two earned, on three hits while striking out five and walking four.

All nine Lady Panthers had at least one hit in the game and every player either scored a run or drove one in. Miracle and Thacker both singled twice, scored two runs and drove in two to lead the way. Price, Caldwell and Hamilton also finished with two hit apiece while Satterfield tripled, Lake doubled, and McCarty and Elliott added RBI singles.

Cumberland Gap (9-6) was scheduled to visit Washburn on Friday and will be back home on Thursday for a district game against South Greene.
