The Pineville Independent School Board introduced its new member during its regular meeting on Monday.
Dustin Sams was appointed to the position. He was sworn in by Bell Circuit Court Judge Robert Costanzo.
Sams replaces Jeanette Cawood, who resigned from the board nearly two months ago. At the time of her resignation, Cawood said she felt it was time to step aside and let another concerned citizen take a spot on the board.
Cawood was appointed to an unexpired term for the board in 2005 and ran for re-election twice.
The board also discussed the Community Eligibility Option (CEO) during the meeting. The CEO program allows all school age children to eat breakfast and lunch for no charge. Several school districts in the area, including Bell County, have entered the program.
Pineville Superintendent Terry Hayes said it could save parents money overtime if they enter into the program.
“I think it would be really efficient in this community,” said Hayes.
Larry Hammonds, Breathitt County Superintendent and Hayes’ mentor, commented on the program, stating it is a great program to have for students and their families
“My recommendation is that any school that comes close to meeting (the requirements) really needs to look at it,” said Hammonds. “A lot of people paying for lunch feel they are paying twice.”
Hammonds also said school districts who enter the program don’t have to deal with outstanding lunch charges.
Paula Goodin gave the ADA report during the meeting.
She reported the elementary school ended with a 93.8 percent attendance rate with 266 students enrolled. The high school finished with a 93.18 percent attendance rate with 226 students enrolled.
