A man charged with murdering his son entered a guilty plea in the Bell Circuit Court on Thursday.
Richard Goodman Sr. is charge with murdering his son Richard Goodman Jr. He entered the plea in the presence his wife, his surviving children and the mother and siblings of the victim. Lt. Tom Busic of the Middlesboro Police Department was also present at the hearing.
The plea agreement asks for Goodman Sr. to serve 20 years in the penitentiary. Goodman Sr.’s final sentencing will be handed down on Aug. 31.
Approximately two years ago, Goodman Sr. was charged with shooting his son and then fled the scene. Goodman, Jr. was transported to Middlesboro ARH by EMS where he was later pronounced dead.
Goodman Sr.’s vehicle was then spotted heading through the Cumberland Gap Tunnel and MPD officers, along with the Cumberland Gap National Park Rangers, followed the vehicle until the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department could arrive.
Approximately 20 minutes after the shooting, Goodman Sr. was arrested, according to MPD. Chief Jeff Sharpe reported that Goodman Sr. suffered non-life threatening injuries during the altercation with his son and was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment.
