COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) — A bomb threat phoned to the corporate headquarters of Carmike Cinemas prompted police Friday to search some the chain’s movie theaters in multiple states for possible explosives.
Officials at Columbus-based Carmike alerted the FBI after discovering the threat in a voice mail message Friday morning, said company spokesman Terrell Mayton. He said the call was placed after hours Thursday by someone claiming to work for a contractor that provides janitorial services to Carmike.
No bombs were found. Most theaters were cleared to open before their first show times Friday, Mayton said.
He said he did not know how many theaters were mentioned in the threat or in how many states.
Carmike owns 233 theaters in 35 states. News outlets Friday reported authorities searching theaters in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky and North Carolina.
A spokesman for the FBI in Atlanta did not immediately return a call seeking comment Friday.
While Mayton would not discuss specifics of the call, Columbus police said the caller made an apparent reference to the Sylvester Stallone move “The Expendables 2” that opened Friday.
“It sounded like a disgruntled worker,” Columbus police Lt. Bill Rawn told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer. He said the caller said: “You don’t pay us enough. You cut back our hours. We’re not expendable. We’ll show you we’re not expendable.”
The theater located in the Middlesboro Mall was contacted by the Daily News but could not comment on the matter at hand.
