Bell Central School Center Principal Greg Wilson hosted a fundraiser for autism awareness this week.
To promote the event and generate funds, Wilson volunteered himself to become a human autism awareness ribbon by letting his students and teachers tape him to the wall.
Strips of Duct Tape were lined up for participants to acquire and literally tape the principal to the wall. Those making donations were allowed to get a strip of tape and personally fasten the principal to the wall.
Over $700 was raised in the event.
The funds come on the heels of a recent, previous fundraiser for autism where nearly $500 was raised. That event was an autism awareness walk held at the Page School.
Funds from the event go toward buying technology to assist students with special needs. More specifically, the money will go toward buying iPads and apps for the children to use.
Wilson had already obtained iPads for teachers at Bell Central. Through observation, Wilson realized how beneficial the iPads were for the teachers, especially with relating to students with special needs.
Amanda Blevins, mother of an autistic child and teacher of moderate and severe disability students at Bell Central, praised the idea. She said the iPads helped her in teaching and relating with the students, but acknowledged her daughter had also benefited.
Blevins refers to her daughter as her little miracle.
“It’s almost unbelievable how far she’s come,” said Blevins.
The event was an opportunity for students and teachers to be part of something special, with the final hour of school on this day dedicated to the educational awareness of this challenging developmental disorder.
The gymnasium was filled with students, teachers and members of the autism awareness group in Bell County.
The kids chanted to the top of their lungs: “Tape him up.” Eventually, they did just that.
