Volunteers from local 4-H groups met on Saturday at the old Bell High School to launch out on a roadside litter pickup. April is PRIDE emphasis month and these particular volunteers were doing their part to participate.
Richard Mason and Michelle Mcglone, leaders of the Bell County 4-H Community Club, were instrumental in rallying together the young 4-H helpers. Also, Brandy Calvert, the County Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development, assisted in organizing and promoting the event.
PRIDE is an acronym that stands for “Personal Responsibility In a Desirable Environment.” The organization stretches across 42 counties in southern and eastern Kentucky. Their emphasis’ remains on improving water quality, cleaning up solid waste problems, and advancing environmental education.
PRIDE is a nonprofit organization founded in 1997 by Congressman Hal Rogers (KY-5) and General James E. Bickford, who was the Kentucky Environmental Protection Secretary.
PRIDE efforts are also being bolstered by Boy Scouts Troop 544 who are are conducting a free curbside pickup of recyclables in Middlesboro this coming Saturday. If you would like a curbside pickup, you can contact them at curbkick@gmail.com or by picking up a form at Middlesboro City Hall.
