Two students from Bell Central School Center have made an effort to make sure everyone has a chance to enjoy Halloween. Abigail Cornett and Macenna Lefevers have put together a costume drive for students in the school who may need costumes for Halloween.
“We wanted to get costumes for kids that could not afford them,” said Cornett.
The whole idea for the costume drive came from a magazine, according to Cornett. After seeing the idea in a magazine, Cornett told her mother about the idea. Her mother told her that it may be possible to have the event at school.
When she returned to school, Cornett told Lafevers about the idea. The two told Lesa Straup, the family resource center director, about the idea. Straup referred the girls to principal Greg Wilson, who gave the girls the approval to do the drive.
“The kids just decided on their own that they wanted to do this,” said Straup. “They did all the work.”
The costume drive began in September. Since then several costumes have been donated to the cause.
The family resource center, along with teachers, will identify students in the school who need the costumes. Parents have also contacted the school and requested the costumes. Costumes were handed out yesterday and will continue being handed out next week until all the costumes are gone.
Assistant principal Jennifer Wilder said she is extremely proud of the girls, as are many of the school staff.
“I hope the kids that can’t afford a costume can get a good costume this year,” said Cornett.
“I hope they enjoy (the costumes),” said Lafevers.
