“Shop with a Trooper’

Staff Report

Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 10 in Harlan has been giving back to children in their service community all week with the KSP Christmas Shopping Spree.

On Wednesday, the department took 20 children from Bell County — 10 from Lone Jack and 10 from Pineville elementary — to Walmart for the shopping spree.

Each child received $120 to spend on clothes and toys.

“We don’t want kids to be afraid of us,” said Trooper Shane Jacobs. “This helps build a relationship with the children.”

Following the shopping spree, the children were treated to a meal provided by Walmart.

Each year, KSP rotates between schools in the area when it comes to choosing students. Jacobs stated he hopes they will be able to continue to keep the same amount of students each year.

KSP raises the money used for the shopping spree through donations and selling different items throughout the year.

“This is a great way to give back to the community,” said Jacobs.

Earlier in the week, KSP Post 10 had their shopping spree in Harlan and Barbourville.

Anyone who wants to send donations to use during the shopping spree can send them to KSP Post 10 in Harlan or call Jacobs at 606-573-3131 for more information.
