Host Knox Central and Corbin took top honors at the SEKC track meet on Friday as the Knox Central girls took first overall in the team standings with the Lady Redhounds second and the Corbin boys were first with the Panthers second.

In the girls’s meet, Williamsburg placed third with Bell County coming fourth, Harlan County fifth and Middlesboro placed eighth. On the boys’ side, Harlan County was third, Clay County fourth and Bell County fifth.

Highlights for local teams included a first place finish for the Bell County boys’ 4x800 relay. The team of Nathan Tanner, Donovan Napier, Mitchell Miracle and Austin Shackleford completed the race in a time of 8:58.24, over 14 seconds ahead of second place Clay County.

Bobcat senior Stephen Griffin easily took first place in both the long jump and the triple jump. He went 18 feet-7.5 inches to win the long jump by 7.5 inches and his 38-foot, six inch triple jump was three inches ahead of the field.

Tanner, another Bell senior, brought home a second place finish in the boys’ 1600 meter run with a time of 4:55.12 while Shackleford, an 8th grader, finished second in the boy’s 800 with a time of 2:09.59. Shackleford teamed with Napier, Isaac Muncy and Nathan Morales to give the Bobcats a second place finish in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:53.03.

On the girls’ side, junior Kelly Brown led the Lady Cats by taking first in the 3200 meter run, second in the 1600 and third in the 800. Brown’s time of 13:06.90 in the 3200 was nearly 40 seconds ahead of the field. She completed the 1600 in 5:57.08 (getting edged out by Knox Central’s Sabrina Elliott by five-hundredths of a second) and the 800 in 2:47.19.

Bell County also got a second place finish in the girls’ 4x100 meter relay. The team of Allison Howard, Jessica Burnett, Maci Morris and Desa Maefield turned in a time of 57.77.

Brown, Morris, Lexi Sanders and Kaite Mason took third in the 4x800 relay with a time of 12:23.70 while Mason, Sanders, Burnett and Katrina Johnson finished third in the 4x400 with a time of 5:10.71.

Lady Cat sophomore Cassidy Nantz placed third on the 3200 meter run with a season-best time of 15:07.40 and also finished in a tie for fourth in the high jump after clearing the bar at four feet.

Middlesboro sophomore Emily Pratt brought home a third place finish in the 100 meter dash with a time of 14.69 seconds.

The regional meets are next Saturday with the Bell County boys and girls competing in Region 5 AA at Boyle County while the Middlesboro and Pineville teams head to Williamsburg for the Region 6A meet.
