The Children’s Reading Foundation of Appalachia-KY will debut its newest program at the upcoming Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival.
“Read Up: Stop the Summer Slide” is a summer literacy program that aims to reverse the summer slide — a situation where students lose up to three months of reading skills while out for summer vacation.
Read Up features free weekly story-times and is for children from birth to age 8 and their parents or caregivers.
Each week adults leave with new skills and motivation to encourage reading and children leave with a new book and fun take home materials.
Co-Director of Summer Read Up and Literacy Volunteer with the Reading Foundation Debbie Knuckles is enthusiastic about another addition to the already increasing list of program offerings.
“The addition of our second family literacy initiative this year is keeping us very busy but very excited,” exclaimed Knuckles. “We are at the top of our game, having just implemented READY! for Kindergarten.”
Knuckles is optimistic that Bell County will appreciate the programs funded by newly obtained grants.
“We hope that our community, school administrators and families will become active participants in everything we are able to offer over the next year, thanks to our Innovative Approaches to Literacy Grant,” explained Knuckles.
The importance of the success of the programs is obvious for the co-founder.
“Our children are depending on us,” concluded Knuckles.
The kick off readings will be held on Saturday at the Bell Theater in Pineville, which will serve as the foundations location for the event. The readings will most likely be inside, but the group will have a table set out in front of the theater as well.
Additional summer dates and locations will be announced as they become available.
