Plans for the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department (CCSD) to set up a satellite office in Cumberland Gap are in the works.
“Basically what they are going to be doing is just filing their reports here,” explained Cumberland Gap Mayor John Douglas at Monday nights’ Board of Mayor and Alderman (BMA) Meeting. “That’s basically all they are going to be doing.”
Original plans were for the CCSD satellite office to be located inside the Mayor’s office at Town Hall but citizens have voiced their concerns about privacy issues. The alternate location discussed on Monday night was to use the BMA’s meeting room for the satellite location.
“I have had some concerned citizens who feel it may be better if they set up the office in here for privacy,” Chuck Coffey, Alderman, told the board.
“Privacy is a big thing now,” added Joan Webb, Alderman.
Douglas pointed out that privacy may also be a problem with that solution as the room is currently occupied until 1 p.m. everyday. This may only be a temporary problem though, as the person currently using the room is searching for another office.
Ultimately, the decision of which Town Hall office will be used is left up to Claiborne County Sheriff David Ray.
“The sheriff is supposed to come by and if he doesn’t think it’s feasible or proper to set up (in my office), that’s fine,” said the mayor in regards to using the alternative location of the BMA meeting room.
The walking trail has been temporarily closed due to a tree falling and subsequently blocking part of the trail. Various tree removal options were discussed at the meeting.
It is unclear as to the amount of damage the tree did when it fell. Once the tree is removed from the walking trail, it can be established how much repair work will need to be completed before the trail can open again.
“Once we get the tree out of the way, we can see if it’s just the rails or is there a structure problem underneath the tree,” explained Jerry Hopson, Alderman.
