A Pineville man was arrested in connection with the theft of a backhoe stolen from the Hinkle Construction company. Toby Haley, 42, was arrested by deputies from the Bell County Sheriff’s Department and charged with receiving stolen property $10,000 or more.
According to sheriff Bruce Bennett, his office took the initial report of the stolen equipment on Oct. 22 from representatives of the Hinkle Construction company. The equipment had been parked and was being used for the repaving project on U.S. 119 near the KY 987 junction.
On Wednesday, deputies Shane Stewart and BJ Brock located the stolen equipment on Honeycutt Road on Laurel Hill, according to the press release. The backhoe, a 2006 Caterpillar worth an estimated $60,000, was returned that same afternoon.
Haley was arrested and charged with the crime on Thursday. According to the detention center website, he was released from the detention center on Friday.
Stewart and Brock are in charge of the investigation, which remains open. Further charges and arrests are still pending.
In other police news, a Middlesboro man was arrested on assault charges. Clayton Ernest Jackson was arrested by the Middlesboro Police Department and charged with second-degree assault.
According to the arrest citation, Jackson caused physical injury to a male individual by striking him on the left forearm with a claw hammer and then on the left hand a couple of times.
According to the detention center website, Jackson was released from the detention center on Friday.
According to the arrest citation, the victim stated he had raised his left arm to protect his face and head from being struck with the hammer. The injuries obtained by the victim required medical treatment at Middlesboro ARH.
