Students from Bell County High School, Middlesboro High School and Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College got a chance to showcase their Project Lead The Way (PLTW) experiments at Clear Creek Baptist Bible College on Wednesday.
The project consisted of making boats out of cardboard. The boats were made out of cardboard, duct tape and deck sealant. The students designed their boats using 3D computer software and then constructed them.
The students tested their boats in the pool at the college. Each group had an individual inside the boat attempting to paddle across the pool and back.
Southeast Professor Gary L. Steenbergen, who was the professor over the project, stated the students had to calculate volume, displacement of water and water levels when constructing their boats.
“These students are intelligent,” said Steenbergen. “We wanted to show that engineering was fun.”
Steenbergen also stated Bob Vaughn, the retired owner of Vaughn and Melton, was a big supporter of the PLTW program.
PLTW is the leading provider of rigorous and innovative Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education curricular programs used in middle and high schools across the nation.
Students in the program take five classes and receive college credit for them. If the students pass the exam, they can receive engineering credit from the University of Kentucky.
