EWING, Va. — Junior forward Devin Enix scored 31 points Monday as the Pineville Lady Mountain Lions came from behind to beat Thomas Walker 73-60.

“It got a little tight there and Devin did a great job. She was very efficient and hit her free throws, she just put us on her back and took us there,” Pineville coach Matt Shafer said.

The Lady Pioneers came out hot. They got eight points from Morgan White in the first quarter, Marquetta Garnett and Madison Lake hit 3-pointers and Katie Daniels knocked down a pair of free throws as Thomas Walker took a 16-14 lead after on quarter.

Pineville got seven points from Enix in the first, along with five from Stacey Washington and a basket from Autumn Short. In the second period Enix poured in 11 points, Erica Gambrell and Emily Mullins hit 3s as the Lady Lions outscored Thomas Walker 21-12 to take a 35-28 lead into the half.

Senior guard Annalee Adams left the game with an ankle injury in the second period and didn’t return.

“Erica did a really nice job of handling their pressure once our two other main guards were out. Annalee hurt herself and Emily was in foul trouble,” Shafer added.

Lake scored eight of her 11 points in the third quarter for the Lady Pioneers, while Washington put in seven of her 14 as Pineville kept pace. The lead was 53-46 going into the fourth.

Kaitlyn Fuston and Garnett scored five points each for Thomas Walker in the final period, but Enix had an answer every time they closed the gap to five. She scored 13 of her points in the final period and Pineville also got four points from 7th-grader Jillian Enix as they pulled away late to win by 13.

“Jill played the whole fourth quarter for me, went 3-for-4 from the field and grabbed some rebounds. I was just proud of what the bench gave me between Jill, Tiffany Sutton and Autumn Short,” said Shafer.

Pineville (6-4) plays Williamsburg today at 7 p.m. as the Bowman Memorial Classic continues at Lynn Camp High School. Shafer and Williamsburg coach Andrea Ellis will both be coaching with no shoes on to raise awareness for a charity providing shoes to needy children.

“It’s called Barefoot for Bare Feet and it’s for an organization called Samaritan, which I think was started by Billy Graham. It’s to raise awareness of children that don’t have shoes and they’ll be accepting donations of old shoes and money at the game,” Shafer said. “Anything we raise all stays here in southeastern Kentucky and it’s a really thing we can do to show the kids that what we do is bigger than basketball.”
