LOG MOUNTAIN — The Bell County Bobcats face their second straight stiff test this evening as they head back to Lexington to take on Class 6A Bryan Station as part of the iHigh Football Frenzy.
The Defenders outscored Anderson County 41-34 last week and will present the Bobcats with another spread offense that likes to throw the ball.
“They’re kind of a spin off of the old UK offense. Craig Yeast, an old Kentucky star, was their coach last year and they’ve kept the offense. They threw it 37 times last week so it kind of shows they’re a high-powered offense that kind of mixes the run with the pass,” Bell coach Wayne Mills said. “They’re very talented, very athletic, so we’ve definitely got to be disciplined football team. The most disciplined team will win.”
Bell did well in defending the Lexington Catholic passing game in a tough 21-7 loss in their opener. The Bobcats were done in by a few fumbles, so Mills has emphasized taking care of the ball in practice this week.
He said the team is healthy going into the game and that the other key for the Bobcats on offense is to stick to the basics.
“With their speed and athleticism, we’ve got to take it straight ahead because they are so quick. If we try and do anything razzle-dazzle they’re going to run and jump on our backs,” Mills said. We’ve got to play Mountain football and hopefully that will prevail for us up in the big city of Lexington.”
Expect Bell to use a heavy dose of running backs Ryan Collett and Jonathan Polly to try and ground out first downs and keep the Defenders offense off the field. As long as they can do that and avoid the turnovers they should be able to give Bryan Station all they want.
The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. in Lexington.
“Everybody come up and support us, it’s an early kick-off. The game will also be on WMIK (92.7) and iHigh will be streaming it live on the Internet,” Mills added.
