The Middlesboro boys’ tennis team ran their record to 10-2 on Thursday as they took all nine matches from South Laurel. Meanwhile, the Lady Jackets improved to 11-0 with a 5-1 win over the Lady Cardinals.
In boys’ singles it was Middlesboro’s Micah Robbins downing South’s Austin Phelps 8-3 while senior J.P. Maiden blanked Ben McDonald 8-0 at number two singles. Jacket Eric Francis edged out Ben Tonkel 8-6, Owen Collins beat Ethan Carnahan 8-2, Abhishek Singh topped Plinio Tuta 8-3 and Christoff Naylor defeated Andrew Watts 8-2.
In boys’ doubles the team of Francis and Robbins held off South Laurel’s Phelps and Tonkel 7-5 and Jacob Jones and Jacob Voges teamed up for an 8-3 win over McDonald and Carnahan. Clay Green and Noah Brown completed the sweep with a 6-2 win over Rush and Helton at No. 3 doubles.
In girls’ play the Lady Jackets took five of the six singles matches to secure the win, the teams didn’t play doubles.
South Laurel’s Neha Rao knocked off MHS senior Taylor Moyers 6-3, 4-6 as the top seeds are playing two-setters to get ready for the upcoming 13th Region Tournament.
From there, the Lady Jackets swept the remaining matches. Madison Saylor defeated Emily Turner 9-8 (7-2) in a tie-breaker, Baylie Burnsma shut out Savanna Durham 8-0, Hannah Warren got past Anna McCowan 8-4, Jane Millett cruised to an 8-0 win over Kayla Cornett and Ellie Epperson beat Hannah Amburgey 8-4.
The Middlesboro tennis teams will host North Laurel on Monday and Whitley County on Tuesday.
