EWING, Va. —Cumberland Gap bounced back in impressive fashion from a disappointing last-second loss to Greeneville last Friday. Tuesday the Panthers jumped out to quick lead and never looked back as they rolled to an 80-52 win at Thomas Walker.
“I’m extremely proud of this team tonight. We came out from the start with hands up, aggressive defense. We had talked about getting back into the flow and we got back into running the floor,” said Panther coach Ernie Clawson. “Overall, I’m just happy with our effort and the way we executed offensively. Most of all I though our press worked extremely well. It was intensity and they showed that they wanted to win and get that loss out of their mouths.”
Senior center Isaac Daniels led Cumberland Gap with 21 points and also grabbed ten rebounds. Senior forward Tyler Hatmaker also double-doubled with 15 points and 13 rebound in the win.
They led a balanced scoring attack that saw 12 different players score in the game. Senior Blake Arnold finished with eight points and seven assists.
The Pioneers were led by Justin Greer’s 13 points while Justin Catron added 10 and Zach Bailey nine.
Cumberland Gap pressed from the start of the game and Blake Franklin put them on top early with a steal and layup. Hatmaker scored five of his points in the first quarter and a 3-pointer from Jordan King pushed the lead to eight point and the Panther led 17-7 after one.
Tyler Parker scored six of his seven points in the second quarter and back-to-back layups by Hatmaker followed by a jumper from King extended the lead to 35-12.
Thomas Walker got four points from Catron, two free throws from Greer and a 3 from Bailey to cut the lead to 35-23, but Parker’s layup at the buzzer put the Panthers up 37-23 at the half.
Daniels scored eleven of his points in the third quarter as he and Hatmaker scored the opening six points of the period to put the game out of reach.
“We ran our offense at times very well. I thought our post players did a very nice job of sealing off and we tood advantage of that,” Clawson added. “Our post guys played very well and our guards played really well.”
A 3-pointer from Matt Wade gave Cumeberland Gap their biggest lead of the night at 61-30 and they went on to win by 28.
Cumberland Gap (2-2) hosts Chuckey-Doak Friday in a district double-header.
