The Middlesboro boys’ golf team finished in 8th place out of 21 teams in the 10th Region Tournament Tuesday at Woodsen Bend in Somerset.
Senior co-captain Eric Francis led the Jackets with a 79 while Michael Wilson shot an 85, J.P. Maiden an 89. Luke Boyd and Micah Robbins rounded out Middlesboro’s team, shooting 96 and 97, respectively. MHS compiled a team total of 349 on the day.
“This was a good finish for us. We got off to a really good start, then we kind of lost momentum when the rain delay came,” Middlesboro coach Greg Lasley said. “We just could not get back into the flow. However, we hung in there and finished strong.”
Corbin won the tournament with a 314, while Jackson County shot 321 to finish second. Tyler McDaniel from Clay County was medalist for the tournament with a 4-under 68.
With his score of 79, Middlesboro’s Francis was one of the three individuals to qualify for next week’s state tournament in Bowling Green.
“This was such a great round for Eric. It was not an easy golf course under these conditions. To be a senior and go out like this, it is a great accomplishment and something he and his family will always remember,” Lasley said. “It has truly been an honor to coach Eric for the past few years. He really gives everything he has and his attitude is wonderful. This can also be said for my three other seniors; they have all been a joy to coach and so much fun to be around. I wish them all nothing but the best.”
The state tournament will be held at the Bowling Green Country Club.
