HARROGATE, Tenn. — Danielle Caldwell’s inside the park home run leading off the bottom of the 8th inning lifted the Cumberland Gap Lady Panthers to a 4-3 win over Jellico on Thursday.
Caldwell also earned the win after striking out 11 batters while allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits over eight innings. She also walked three and hit a batter.
The Lady Devils struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Abigail Tiller singled with two out courtesy runner Prewitt went to second on a passed ball. Destany Creekmore then reached on a fielder’s choice as Prewitt was safe at third and then scored on an error. Katie Cox followed with an RBI single for a 2-0 Jellico lead.
Cumberland Gap got one run back in their half of the inning as McKenzie Miracle doubled and scored one out later on a Kaitlyn McCarty double.
Tiller kept the Lady Panthers off the board until the bottom of the seventh inning and the Lady Devils added another run in the sixth when Creekmore tripled and then scored on another Cox base hit to make it 3-1.
The Lady Panthers rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the 7th. Jordan Thacker worked a lead off walk and advanced to second on a throwing error after Chelsey Williams lined out to third. Miracle followed with an RBI single. With two out, McCarty reached on an error as Miracle scored to tie the game at three.
Caldwell kept Jellico off the board in the top of the 8th and then brought a quick end to the game with her in-park homer deep down into the left field corner in the bottom of the inning.
Miracle paced the Cumberland Gap offense with two singles and a double. She also walked, scored two runs and drove in one. McCarty singled and doubled, reached on an error and drove in one. Oliva Price doubled while Gena Lake and Thacker both singled.
Jellico’s other hits were two singles from C. Beans while Emily Hughes and Rachel Ayers also had hits. Tiller took a hard luck loss as she gave up just four runs, two earned, on nine hits while striking out ten and walking three.
Cumberland Gap (8-5) returns to action next Thursday with a double-header at Scott County.
