The city of Pineville received first runner-up for for the “Greatest Volunteer Participation” award from PRIDE. The announcement came during the council meeting on Tuesday. Mark Davis from PRIDE presented the trophy to mayor Sherwin Rader and the council.

During PRIDE Spring Cleanup, the city cleaned 43 roadways, 52 miles, four tires and 82 bags of trash with 125 volunteers. There were two streams, one dump, 1,013 roadways, 4,067 miles, 539 white goods, 3,037 tires, 50,042 bags of trash and 3, 008 tons of trash cleaned across the region.

The city of Greensburg won the award this year for the region.

During the Main Street update, director JoAnna Foley stated the annual haunted jail will be moved to the Pine Mountain campgrounds that have been shut down for several years. “(The campground) is spooky during the daytime, so I can’t imagine at night,” said Foley about the campground.

There have been more days scheduled for the event in case of rain. The dates have been tentatively set for Oct. 1, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 15, 19, 25, 26 and 30. It will be $8 to enter the haunted campground.

Foley is looking for volunteers to work the event. She said she would like to have 25 to 30 volunteers, but would not turn down any volunteers.

Foley is also helping Pine Mountain with a Halloween ball that will be on Oct. 27. Trunks of Treats will be on Oct. 28 and the Pineville school Halloween carnival.

Kids Fest in Pineville take place from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Aug. 25. The will be free food, inflatables, a water slide, a jewelry booth and many more fun activities for the children.

Foley said any organization that would like to come and set up something fun and free for the children is welcome to do so.

The council also established the real property and adval tax rate for 2012. The tax rate remained the same at 27.9 cents per $100.

Following the agenda items of the meeting, Rader expressed some concerns that have been brought to her attention. One of those concerns involves dogs.

Rader has received complaints about individuals walking their dogs in other people’s yards. The complaint has been that the dogs are using the bathroom and the owner has not been cleaning it up. Rader requests that everyone cleanup up after their dog.

The second concern involves garbage along the streets in Pineville. Rader asks everyone to please use a trash can instead of throwing the garbage along the road. Rader stated that the council is looking to place more garbage cans around the Wallsend area.

Other business taken care of during the meeting included the approval of minutes of the July 9, 17 and 19 meetings.
