At approximately 9 p.m. on Monday, this Martin Transport tanker truck was attempting a left turn from southbound on U.S. 25E into the Pilot Truck Stop. The drive axle broke causing the left two tires and wheels to wedge under the tanker trailer. Dragging the tires caused a fire, which the driver was able to extinguish with his on-board fire extinguisher. The Middlesboro police and fire departments responded as did a fire unit from the Bell County department. A local towing service was able to remove the tires from under the tanker allowing the driver to pull into the parking area. A sheriff deputy assisted MPD with traffic control as the rear of the tanker had extended into the north bound lane of U.S. 25E.
