The Middlesboro City Council street subcommittee met on Tuesday to discuss issues dealing with the committee. One topic of discussion was the amount of wrecks occurring at 30th and Winchester. According to councilman Lucas Carter, wrecks happen at that location often.
Carter suggested that larger stop signs may help the problem because it seems as though people are just running through the intersection. Middlesboro Mayor Bill Kelley wondered if visibility was still an issue in that location.
Middlesboro Police Chief Jeff Sharpe stated one problem with the intersection is that people tend to be in a hurry and do not stop and look both ways before crossing the intersection.
“It is not a visibility problem if you stop your car and look,” said Sharpe.
Another issue mentioned at the subcommittee meeting involved stop signs around the city. Councilmen Ronnie Carter and Allen Farmer stated several stop signs are either completely faded or have been defaced. According to the committee, the stop sign at 38th and Chester is completely white and the sign at 31st and Dorchester has the letters “KKK” across the sign.
There is also a sign with the Ten Commandments covering the word stop on 30th Street. The council plans to address the issue at a future date.
