MLK celebration set for Sunday, Monday

Special to the Daily News

The Lincoln School Homecoming Committee will hold its annual events in Middlesboro on both Jan. 20 and Jan. 21, celebrating the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Jan. 20 will begin with a March from the Middlesboro City Parking Lot at 2:30 p.m. to The Church of the True Living God of Holiness of Holiness at 329 South 20th Street, Middlesboro. Ministers, veterans and soldiers are being asked to come and to lead the March. If you are unable to walk, please join the caravan following the marchers and bring your motor vehicle, perhaps giving a senior citizen a ride with you.

Following the march, the Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Church Service will be held at The Church of the True Living God of Holiness of Holiness, at 3 p.m. The keynote speaker for the afternoon will be John J. Johnson, the executive director of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights.

The Kentucky Commission on Human Rights enforces the Kentucky Civil Rights Act and the U.S. Civil Rights Act. These laws make discrimination illegal. The Commission works to end discrimination and promote equality for everyone. Johnson was born in Louisville and was raised in Franklin, Kentucky.

He served as President of the Kentucky Conference of NAACP Branches for 14 years and served for 20 years in various capacities as part of the national staff of the NAACP. In 2002, during Zimbabwe’s Presidential Election, Johnson’s NAACP delegation was the only American organization invited to work as independent observers. In 2005, Johnson was inducted into the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame. He was appointed into his current position as Executive Director of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights on Sept. 1, 2007.

Music for the afternoon will be provided by the Voices of Faith and the choir of The Church of the True Living God of Holiness of Holiness. Also, Hon. Bill Kelley and Hon. Karen Greene Blondell will appear on program.

On Jan. 21 the annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday celebration will continue with a luncheon honoring our May 2013 graduating high school students from Middlesboro High School, Pineville, Bell County and Barbourville.

This year’s luncheon will be held at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, N. 19th Street, Middlesboro at 11 a.m. Dr. Lovie Stallworth, ARH Middlesboro Clinic Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Physician, will be the guest speaker. Stallworth was born in San Francisco, California. She received her B.A. Degree from the University of Florida, Gainesville, and her MD degree from Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tennessee.

Both her Medical Residency and Chief Residency, Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, were completed at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, where she was also a faculty-appointed Clinical Instructor in both fields. She is licensed in both Tennessee and Kentucky and Board Certified in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine.

Also appearing on the program will be newly elected school board member Rev. Jeff Greene, and music will be furnished by the Victory and Praise Choir of The Church of the True Living God of Holiness of Holiness.
