Organic Gardening: Zone hardiness maps

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has long provided a zone hardiness map to the gardeners in this country to that they can decide which plants can safely be planted in their respective areas. Although this map has always been a good approximation of when the first frost will arrive in the fall and the last frost will occur in the spring, it has never been a precise indicator of anything due to the vagaries of weather.

The zone hardiness map is also a mean indicator of the extreme low temperatures in a given zone. Kentucky, for example, is currently in Zone 7 with a mean temperature of 10
