MIDDLESBORO — 2008 ends on a note as tragic as how it began in Bell County. In a reported head-on collision on Tuesday, Dec. 30, a Middlesboro High School student perished.

Around 4:20 p.m. on Tuesday, emergency responders rushed to the scene of an accident involving injury along Hwy. 441 (West Cumberland Ave.).

Responders discovered a grisly scene. An older model, white Ford pick-up truck, occupied by one male, apparently collided with a silver car occupied by three young females.

Brooke Lambert, a Middlesboro High School student, was pronounced dead on the scene, Bell County Coroner Clyde Creech confirmed. Lambert was ejected from the vehicle.

The driver of the car, Ashley Barger, and the other passenger, Whitney Brock (both Middlesboro High School students, as well) were transported from the scene by ambulance to Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Hospital (ARH). The driver of the Ford truck was reportedly transported to Middlesboro ARH directly following the collision, as well. No information was available concerning the patients’ conditions from Middlesboro ARH.

Responding to the accident were the Middlesboro Police Dept., Bell County Rescue Squad, Kentucky State Police, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Middlesboro Fire Dept. and Ambulance Service.

The cause of the collision is unknown at this time. Kentucky State Police is in charge of the investigation.

Tragically, this story will strike a familiar chord with Bell Countians. In January 2008, the lives of four teenagers were claimed in a crash on Ky. Hwy. 92. Early in December, another four teenagers died in a crash on Hwy. 25-E in Pineville.
