LEE COUNTY, Va. — A Keokee woman died on Sunday afternoon when she lost control of her motorcycle and wrecked in a remote section of Lee County near the Jefferson National Forest, according to a news release.

Virginia State Police (VSP) stated that 59-year-old Karen Gibson Thomas, of Thomas Hollow Road in Keokee, was driving a 1995 Honda motorcycle when the wreck occurred just after 2 p.m. — near the intersection of State Route 606 and State Route 628 in the western portion of Lee County.

The VSP said Thomas was traveling westbound on Route 606 and attempting to make a right turn onto SR 628 — an unlined, secondary road — when the motorcycle she was driving hit loose gravel and debris in the roadway and began to skid.

According to the police report, Thomas’ motorcycle ran off a small bridge on SR 628 after she lost control, causing the vehicle to land in a creek below.

A VSP spokesman said Thomas’ speed at the time of the wreck is still under investigation.

Thomas was transported by ambulance to Lee Regional Medical Center in Pennington Gap, Va. She was pronounced dead a short time later from injuries sustained in the accident.
