One killed, four injured in Harlan accident

One person was killed and four others injured in a two vehicle crash on U.S. 119 in Harlan Wednesday.

According to a report from the Kentucky State Police, Mary Thompson, 55, Evarts, was driving her Chevy Cavalier west on Dorcas Jane Lane and failed to stop and yield the right of way at the intersection of U.S. 119. The car crossed into the path of a 1998 Ford F-150 driven by Mark Helton, 22, of Pineville.

Dorothy McMillian, 50, of Wallins, a passenger in Thompson's car, was prounounced dead at the scene. Thompson and Helton were both airlifted by Life Net to Holstein Valley Hospital in Tennessee. Both are listed as in stable condition.

Two passengers in the truck Jackie Baker, 28, of Fourmile, and John Sturgill, 23, of Pineville, were both admitted to Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital and are also in stable condition.

The accident is being investigated by Trooper Curtis Pingleton. He was assisted at the scene by Troopers J.T. Whitaker, J. Halcomb, and W. Szczepan, Harlan County coroner Phillip Bianchi, the Harlan County Rescue Squad, Johnson Life Care EMS and Harlan County EMS.
