Born July 9, 1909, he was the son of the late Gillis and Nora Belle Mason Carter. A member of Harmony Baptist Church and Lima Missionary Baptist, he had retired from Lima Locomotive. He was ordained as a deacon in 1951 at Red Oak Baptist Church in Middlesboro.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Vergie Fuson Carter; grandson, Keith Napier; daughter, Doris Maxine Carter; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Clevis and Gillis Carter Jr.; and sisters, Ruby Simpson and Zella Partin.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel Smith Carter, Clear Creek; son, Roger (Jerrilynn) Carter, Waynesfield, Ohio; daughters, Eileen (Denver) Barnes, Elida, Ohio, Kathy (John) Guffey, Lima, Ohio, Jacqueline (Leroy) Gordon, Carlisle, Ohio, Lynn (Ron) Wilder, Waynesfield, Ohio, and Sherry (Colson) Napier, Pineville; 21 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Harmony Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Brock presiding. Music will be provided by Harmony Baptist Church choir.
Burial services will be held Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lima, Ohio.
The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Friday at Creech-Durham Funeral Home, Pineville, which is in charge of arrangements.
