BARBOURVILLE - Barbourville High School had several items on the agenda Thursday evening as it celebrated homecoming, senior night and gave tribute to coach Vencil "Dinky" Phipps, whose number 35 jersey was retired.

The Barbourville Tigers also had reason for celebration as the team finished its regular season with a 66-55 victory over visiting Pineville.

The game remained close most of the early minutes of the game until Chris Jackson nailed three baskets in the last couple of minutes, allowing

Barbourville to pull away with an 18-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Pineville came back with Blake Hensley contributing eight points, including two 3-point baskets to narrow the margin to six points at the half.

Barbourville dominated the second half with a zone defense, greatly limiting Pineville's ability to get inside.

The Tigers were led by Chris Jackson with 22 points and Matt Warren with 14 points.

Jake Hampton caught fire in the last quarter, sinking four 3-point shots.

Blake Hensley led the Pineville effort with 21 points followed by Hampton with 18, Derek Rosenbaum, who scored 11 points, and Dustin Day with five points.

The game tightened up a bit after Phipps pulled his starters in the last two minutes of the game, but time ran out for the Mountain Lions.

"We had a big night for us. It was our last night for our three seniors. We had a lot of things on our mind and basketball wasn't one of them," Barbourville coach Dinky Phipps said. "I'm not taking anything away from Pineville. Pineville was peaking at the right time of the year where a lot of other teams are struggling and I think they will do good in their district. They are very young and they have that desire to win," Phipps added.
