Sixteen young ladies, members of the Claiborne High School Winter Guard competed with over twenty other flag and drill teams at Maryville High School on Feb. 19. While the flag team frequently performs as part of the high school marching band; this competition was based on drill, dance, and the ability of the team to tell a story with choreographed movement. The theme for their routine was Romeo and Juliet.
Judges and spectators agreed that it was one of the two most complex and difficult performances seen at the competition.
Flag and drill teams don't merely compete at the high school level. Several college teams also threw their flags into the competition. Both the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and UT at Knoxville were represented at Maryville. While this may seem to be a mismatch in skills, the ladies of the Winter Guard strutted with the best of them and brought home a respectable fourth place standing. Perhaps the college team coaches were just scouting for their next year's recruits.
The CHS Winter Guard is sponsored by Mr. Matt Gowan, CHS Band Director and coached by his wife, Jennifer Gowan.
