MIDDLESBORO - It's a good thing to reward kids that have good behavior in the classroom, according to East End Intermediate school and the Middlesboro Kiwanis Club. The two joined forces to head up a program known as Kiwanis Terrific Kids.

"It's a real nice corporation with Kiwanis that they can recognize something that we do here at the school," said Farra Shoffner, who is with the school's family resource center.

Shoffner said East End has been recognizing students for the last couple of years on good citizenship in the classroom. The Kiwanis of Middlesboro was looking to become more involved with the schools. The idea from a teacher for a select number of students to be chosen as 'Terrific Kids' came about shortly after.

The kids are treated to lunch at J Milton's during the club's normal meeting time on Wednesdays. Fourth and fifth grade students at East End are chosen, normally a boy and a girl from each grade level. They are chosen at the beginning of each month during the school year. They are hand picked by their teachers based on their class room behavior, manners, how well they get along with others, respectfulness and attendance.

For the entire month, the kids get to not only eat at J Milton's with the Kiwanis Club but they also get to eat lunch with Principal Steve Martin in his office. The Kiwanis of Middlesboro also awards a certificate and some goodies such as pencils, bumper stickers and erasers.

"They are always nervous and really excited," said Shoffner. "By the time the get there (Kiwanis meeting), they are so nervous they get all shy but when they get back in the car, they said it was great and they really enjoyed it."

The Kiwanis Terrific Kids program is nation wide with over 800 Kiwanis clubs sponsoring this achievement program for young minds. The program has not only been affecting student behavior, self-esteem, and academic performance, but also improving attendance.
